A lot of times, what you hear from the media is only one side of the story–maybe the wrong side. A perfect example would be the story of Barry Bonds.

Barry Bonds is the personal hero of a lot of folks. He holds the Major League Baseball record for home runs. He is also the player who has had the most walks and intentional walks.

What has damaged Mr. Bonds' reputation is the allegation that he knowingly took anabolic steroids to enhance his performance. At least as to the anabolic steroid use, Bonds says that he used a balm given to him by his trainer and that he was ignorant of the ingredients. So far, nobody has given authorities any reason to think that this isn't so.

But here are a few things that you weren't aware of regarding Barry Bonds. Mr. Bonds was a skillfull high school ball player. The Giants drafted him but he postponed joining them Bobby Bonds, Barry's father, was also a very gifted athlete. Mr. Bonds' father, Bobby, was also an amazing athlete. Willie Mays played with Barry's dad and was also Barry's godfather.

Mr. Bonds has three children, two of whom are entering their teen years and speak Swedish and French. Mr. Bonds is a very private person but he has said that he is very fond of religion.

No matter what people think about the steroid accusations, Mr. Bonds will continue to be one of the all-time best ball players. And he is clearly very intellectual. I hope he can serve as a role model for today's young people, no matter what happens with his legal concerns. By some means, he will be an example.
