Back Mountain Dental / James C. DeFinnis D.M.D. -Sedation Dentistry at Wilkes-Barre: Does It Really Eliminate the Pain?
(I will never share your email or name with anyone)
Just as the sun is going to rise every morning, there are people who have an inherent fear of going to the dentist. This is something dentists have to live with. If you see how they have been generally depicted, it is clear why people have this unjustified fear. A classic example is the movie "Little Shop of Horrors", which was also a Broadway play. A major character was a sadistic dentist, played by Steve Martin in the second version and Jack Nicholson in the first. Dentists have long been unfairly typecast. This is also how they are given over-blown qualities in movies and TV.
Quite possibly, many people's dentist fears come from their early years, from what they have heard or experienced. Everybody, it seems, has a story to tell. I'm not sure if there is anyone out there who doesn't have at least one bad dental memory from their younger days.
To keep you away from pain, we use sedation dentistry, of which there are two types. You can choose to have a shot from a needle, or simply take pills. Whatever one you go for, the idea is to induce sleep or at least make you feel very sleepy. But pills don't have as deep an effect and you are unlikely to feel as sleepy as with the needle. The pills still keep you technically awake. Most likely, you will have little memory of the events. Even so, you can still do things like walk and talk. Only, you'll feel very relaxed. Using a needle for sedation is a no-nonsense approach of simply putting your to sleep. However, only rarely do we ever need to put someone to sleep using a needle.
I would be shirking my responsibility if I didn't tell you everything about sedation dentistry. When it comes to sedation dentistry, you can't be too careful. Therefore, a good dentist won't take his eyes off you. He will check on your status constantly while he would have a team of expert assistants on standby as well.
With sedation dentistry at Wilkes-Barre, the dentist will first give you a pill and then wait for it to take effect. Once you feel the pill's effects, you will be totally at ease and the dentist can start his work. It works both ways because you are relaxed and pain-free and the dentist is able to quickly complete his task. As a result, you don't have to be at the clinic for that long. Also, more is achieved in the shorter period, quite often removing the need for future trips to the clinic.
Hopefully, this information will help you ease your fear of dentists. Look out for more about sedation dentistry on this blog.
